The Night Vision Outfitters AN/PVS-14 is a proven night vision monocular system known for its reliability, versatility, and simplicity.  The PVS-14 remains one of the most trusted night vision systems in use by military, law enforcement, and civilian users worldwide.

The PVS-14 features a compact and lightweight housing designed for handheld, helmet-mounted, or weapon-mounted use. Its single-tube configuration allows for natural depth perception while maintaining situational awareness, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of applications.

The unit utilizes a simple and intuitive control layout, including manual gain adjustment, onboard IR illumination, and rotary-style controls. These features allow the user to quickly adapt to changing lighting conditions while maintaining optimal image quality. The integrated IR illuminator provides additional capability in extremely low-light or no-light environments.

Constructed to meet MIL-STD durability requirements, the PVS-14 is built to withstand extremely harsh environmental conditions. The Noctis (Carson) housing is nitrogen-purged and sealed for water submersion of up to sixty six feet, ensuring reliability in adverse weather and demanding environments, including salt-water or marine applications.

Power is supplied by a single AA battery, providing up to approximately 40–50 hours of operation depending on conditions.

Image Intensifier Tube Options

Night Vision Outfitters offers several image intensifier options for this device, allowing customers to select the performance level and price point that best fit their needs.

All of our units are assembled using high-quality, meticulously-selected, brand-new tubes with strict cosmetic blemish and FOM tolerances to ensure excellent quality.

For L3Harris and Elbit tubes, key performance metrics will be provided via email for customer approval prior to shipment (FOM, EBI, HALO, Spots). Please note: L3Harris and Elbit tubes are manufactured in the USA, while NNVT tubes are manufactured in the PRC.

L3Harris Unfilmed White Phosphor

L3Harris unfilmed tubes represent the benchmark for Gen 3 night vision technology and excel in extremely dark environments with little or no ambient light. All L3 tubes we use are “UA” Aviation Grade, meaning they meet L3Harris’ most stringent cosmetic and performance tolerances.

L3Harris SuperGain Unfilmed White Phosphor

SuperGain tubes represent the most premium image intensifier technology currently available. While typical filmless tubes produce 40,000–80,000 fL/fc luminance gain, SuperGain tubes commonly reach 100,000–120,000 fL/fc, producing a brighter image and improved performance in the darkest conditions.

Elbit Systems USA Thin-Film White Phosphor

Elbit thin-film tubes deliver excellent Gen 3 performance at a slightly lower price point than L3 tubes. They perform particularly well in urban or mixed-light environments, making them a great option for users seeking a balance of performance and value.

North Night Vision Technology (NNVT) White Phosphor

NNVT tubes offer a more affordable entry point into night vision while still producing a strong image in moderate ambient light environments. NNVT tubes are a high-quality, high-FOM Gen 2+ technology and can be considered comparable to early Gen 3 performance levels. Please note: NNVT tubes are produced in the PRC, while L3Harris and Elbit tubes are produced in the USA.

Objective and Eyepiece Lens Options

Standard Mil-Spec Optics

High-quality Mil-Spec objective lenses and eyepiece optics are used as our standard optics and provide excellent image quality, clarity, and light transmission. These are typically manufactured by Noctis (Carson) or Night Vision Devices.

BrightPath Optics

These are high-quality optics that offer comparable performance to Noctis and Night Vision Devices but at a slightly lower price point than Mil-Spec optics.  They also provide a small weight reduction of approximately 0.5 ounces per optics set.

Rochester Precision Optics "RPO"

Rochester Precision Optics (RPO) ultralight objective lenses and eyepieces are available as an upgraded option. RPO optics are approximately 20% lighter than standard Mil-Spec optics while maintaining the same excellent optical performance.

Photonis Defense Boomslang Wide FOV

Photonis Defense Boomslang 50° wide-angle field-of-view (FOV) lenses increase the user’s viewable area by approximately 25% compared to standard Mil-Spec optics. Unlike earlier wide-FOV lenses, Boomslangs maintain no visible fisheye distortion with only minor chromatic aberration at the extreme edge of the image. Boomslang optics also reduce system weight by approximately 25–30 grams per eye compared to standard Mil-Spec optics.

ACT in Black Wide FOV

ACT in Black 50° wide-angle field-of-view (FOV) lenses increase the user’s viewable area by approximately 35% compared to standard Mil-Spec optics. These lenses maintain little to no fisheye distortion with only minor chromatic aberration at the edge of the image, while adding only approximately 20 grams per lens compared to standard Mil-Spec optics.

Warranty Information

The Night Vision Outfitters PVS-14 is built to stringent mil-spec standards and is designed for long-term reliability in demanding conditions. These units carry a five-year housing warranty along with a two-year warranty on the image intensifier tubes and overall system.  Additionally, it is one of the most serviceable night vision products ever produced, so buy with confidence knowing you’ll be able to enjoy this unit for years to come.

Typos make this appear sloppy and questionable
Format: Paperback
Number of typos in the first chapter alone makes the info contained within questionable to me. P. 11 Indie games are “mostly releases through streaming services like Twitch and Switch”. Twitch is a streaming video site and Switch is Nintendo’s hybrid handheld/console. P.13: SHMUP is misspelled as SHUMP Survival Horror is listed as “players are generally helpless against a supernatural threat” which is not accurate for the genre’s most popular game, Resident Evil, where you’re well-armed against a non-supernatural threat. Vehicles simulation is listed as a genre but racing is not…even though they are not necessarily the same genre. P.14 Shigeru Miyamoto’s name is spelled as “Shiguru” I’m sure the following chapters will cover Ye Suzaku and Jean Romato.

Level Up Again: Essential Third Edition for Video Game Designers
Format: Paperback
If you’re serious about making fun and successful videogames, you will buy, read and learn from Level Up! 3rd Edition. I was the first person to pre order the 1st edition, and as someone who worked alongside Scott Rogers at videogame publisher THQ, I can tell you this newly expanded volume is the most complete, accessible guide to video game design yet. Scott Rogers remains the “heavy hitter” I described in my original review—equal parts lifelong gamer, pen and paper enthusiast, and seasoned industry pro. He’s witnessed games evolve from the ground up, studied every mechanic, and distilled decades of professional game design wisdom into lessons both beginners and veterans can apply immediately. Building on the solid foundation of the 1st edition—history, team roles, idea to concept mapping, the Triangle of Weirdness, and the Beat Chart—the 3rd Edition has been expanded to cover today’s challenges. You’ll see how to develop ideas with real world appeal and weave monetization strategies into your game designs from day one. A new chapter on playtesting walks you through structuring tests, gathering actionable feedback, and iterating mechanics, saving you weeks of blind alleys. There’s an in depth exploration of pre production through post mortem so you can avoid feature creep, scope collapse, and production bottlenecks. You’ll also find dedicated guidance for console, mobile, VR/AR/MR, and live service games—including detailed control schemes, UI/UX patterns, and economy rules tailored to each platform. And consistent with the first two editions, Scott includes new exercises and analogies—even an original chili recipe that illustrates balancing risk versus reward in game economies (and because Scott loves chili). You’ll still find the clear “Universal Truths” synopses at each chapter’s end, an updated table of contents and index for quick reference, and the cartoons and Rogers isms that make complex concepts easier to understand. If you want to level up your game design knowledge, grab this 3rd Edition of Level Up! For a deep dive on the original material, see my full review of the 1st edition on Amazon. Laddie Ervin Scott’s former boss and video game industry professional.

Like you have a smart helpful co-worker
Format: Paperback
This is the friendliest way to learn real practical game design you’ll ever find. Scott is an expert at this. He knows his stuff. And he’s happy to share. Joyous, even. This book is full of tips and stories and good ways to think about things. There are occasional academic frameworks, but most of those are side notes. Think of this more like you’re starting a job at the game studio of your dreams and the guy sitting next to you knows everything and wants to share. And he can draw! The sketches are cute and really help get the ideas across. I would read this without the images, but the images make it more fun and easier to absorb. I’ve read previous editions and this is the best version by far. The section on prototyping is especially nice. Prototyping is a key concept to learn, and breaking it down with some systems thinking is smart. The updated sketches and references throughout the book are also great - it feels current. About me: I’ve been a professional game designer for over 30 years. I’ve taught this material at colleges for almost ten years. I know game design. This is game design, but even more fun than it already is.
